Tom and I have really been enjoying Orphan Black- it took a few weeks to find its feet, but we kept with it because the premise is interesting and is the kind of thing that needs time to reveal itself, and because I try to make it a point to seek out female-fronted shows to balance out my bromance-heavy viewing habits. We were rewarded once Sarah found the other clones, which picked up the story’s pace a bit.

And the more I watch it, the more I appreciate the work Tatiana Maslany has to do not only to differentiate each of the clones, but also to play one-clone-impersonating-another-clone, often in scenes with multiple copies of herself where you know she’s acting at, like, a tennis ball at eye level or something. She does it so seamlessly I actually forget that I’m watching the same actress play all the parts- occasionally when two clones have to appear close to each other, there will be something just slightly noticeable about the camera angle and *that* will be what reminds me that it’s not two actresses sitting on the couch, it’s the same actress sitting on both sides of the couch in an effects shot.

It’s a BBC America original, but it’s been picked up by BBC Three, so my UK peeps can expect to see it soon, too.

"Top Ten Names for Boys in D.C...."

“Top Ten Names for Boys in D.C.
He returned home that evening to find his 3-year-old son playing on the front lawn. The previous year in India, the boy had developed a serious ear infection. A pediatrician prescribed Ranbaxy’s version of amoxiclav, a powerful antibiotic. For three scary days, his son’s 102° fever persisted, despite the medicine. Finally, the pediatrician changed the prescription to the brand-name antibiotic made by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Within a day, his fever disappeared. Thakur hadn’t thought about it much before. Now he took the boy in his arms and resolved not to give his family any more Ranbaxy drugs until he knew the truth.”

-
Dirty Medicine - Fortune Features

if you ever think mythology is boring or serious business or whatever shit

just remember that cerberus, the hell-hound and guard dog of the underworld, comes from the root indo-european word ḱerberos, which evolved into the greek word kerberos, which got changed to cerberus when it went from greek to latin

ḱerberos means “spotted”

that’s right

hades, lord of the dead, literally fucking named his pet dog spot

The onus is on me to correct a person the first time — I’ve become quite vigilant in this respect. I also love when people ask me how to pronounce it, say it back and ask, “Am I saying it right?” It’s as if they’re throwing me a bone here — yes, I decided to go by this difficult-to-pronounce name, but hey, we’re in this together, this business of being fully who we are and respecting others for doing the same.”

-
“How Do You Spell It?” Life With A Name Nobody Knows How To Pronounce | xoJane

FWIW, I’ve tried to become much more consistent with this when encountering a name I haven’t heard before. I used to wonder if that made me look like some rube and caused the name-haver to roll their eyes, but I have come to the conclusion that the opposite is true: People with unusual-in-America names are perfectly aware that this is the case, and probably run into people effing it up all the time. Thus it is MORE respectful, not less, to stop and say, “Can you repeat that, please? I want to make sure I’m getting it right.”

Happy Mother’s Day to my awesome (and stylish) Mom. :)

Happy Mother’s Day to my awesome (and stylish) Mom. :)

(via Qwertee : Limited Edition Cheap Daily T Shirts | Gone...

(via Qwertee : Limited Edition Cheap Daily T Shirts | Gone in 24 Hours | T-shirt Only £8/€10/$12 | Cool Graphic Funny Tee Shirts)

A story about my cat:

The other night, I got home from work and decided that for once, I was actually more tired than hungry, so after feeding the cats I went upstairs to lie down and read for a bit.

Because evening time is keep-the-cats-company time, Macro wandered upstairs after finishing his dinner and jumped up on the bed with me. He perched himself on my pillow, next to my head, front paws on my shoulder, cheek pressed against my ear. And purred.

Awesome, right? We were having a very pleasant time like that, with me occasionally reaching up to skritch his chin and ears, when suddenly I hear, “HRRRRRRRRRNGH!” right in that same ear and see Macro bolt off the bed and head for the stairs.

And then I heard it too. The front door was opening. Because Tom had come home. But because Tom was not YET home, Macro had appointed himself my protector and was heading to investigate the intrusion. While GROWLING.

He never does this when Tom is at home. Only when I’m alone in the house. I don’t know what he thinks he’ll DO if it’s actually an intruder, rather than the FedEx guy or something, but I guess at 25 pounds, he could probably trip a burglar pretty decisively.

"The problem with being too busy to read is that you learn by experience (or by your men’s..."

“The problem with being too busy to read is that you learn by experience (or by your men’s experience), i.e. the hard way. By reading, you learn through others’ experiences, generally a better way to do business, especially in our line of work where the consequences of incompetence are so final for young men.”

-
Viral James Mattis Email About Reading - Business Insider

A Marine general explains the importance of professional reading. He’s talking about his very high-stakes profession specifically, but it’s not hard to see how those of us in lower-stakes careers can apply this wisdom.
