to have a house of grace

lizzindc:

I missed yesterday’s post but I have a really good excuse, I was eating chili* and watching football at the Bridge’s! Just coincidentally, Tom and Tiffany are the subject of my post this morning.

These two are some of the nicest, most openhearted people I know. Events at their house always involve delicious food, interesting people, and lots and lots of laughter. They seem to attract awesome people who are nerdy in the best way about all kinds of stuff. Be it football, food or SciFi, if you have a nerdy love for something there is probably someone else at one of their get togethers that is just as excited about X as you!

Tom and Tiffany, thank you for being so completely awesome. Being welcomed into your home is something truly wonderful. Also, I want to steal Macro.

*delicious delicious chili I am still having flashbacks to.

This made me really happy, not just because it’s a friend saying something nice about me (though, not gonna lie, that’s a nice way to start a Monday), but because this, the way Lizz describes feeling when she’s at our place, is specifically a goal of ours.

On Friday, Tom and I attended the funeral of his best friend Dave’s Uncle Phil. We knew Phil and his wife Aliceann from church, and while we weren’t really close, they were always very kind to us. Specifically, they were very welcoming when Dave and his family would come visit DC. Dave and Sarah would stay with Phil and Aliceann, who were always happy to host a cookout or some other kind of gathering so Dave’s DC friends could come see them in a relaxing environment. They hosted choir Christmas parties and lunches and all kinds of things, and we always left feeling blessed by their graciousness and hospitality.

At the funeral, the pastor described how it was always a priority for Phil and Aliceann to make their home not just a home for themselves, but a welcoming place for anyone who came to visit them, full of good food and laughter and healing. That was the point where I wept, firstly because they were so successful at it, and secondly because that’s what we want too.

So thanks for coming to our house, everybody. We’re always glad to see you, and we love watching our friends make friends with each other, and I like the chance to let my inner Italian grandma loose in the kitchen, and it makes us really happy to have you at our casa.
